Become a Mentor

iC.A.R.E. mentors volunteer once each week, with one student, for at least one year. Mentoring provides students with the skills they need to discover their inner strengths and to choose a positive path forward. Our volunteers work with K-12 students in the Akron, Barberton, Cuyahoga Falls, and Tallmadge public schools. We support mentors with training, supplies, and a fun and engaging workbook that covers important skills such as goal setting, resilience, and self confidence.

What happens during a mentoring session?

  • Arrive at school during a student’s breakfast, lunch, or study hall.
  • Meet one-on-one with a student in a spare classroom, meeting room, or quiet corner.
  • Listen, talk, and catch up on each other’s week.
  • Do an activity or have a conversation from the Game Plan Workbook.
  • Play a game, do a craft, or walk around the school and talk.
  • Have fun!
